What is Developmental Therapy?

Developmental Therapy (DT) is a discipline that specifically looks at HOW a child is developing during the most significant period of development — birth through 8 years. Developmental Therapists (DT) do not address one specific area, but instead look at a child GLOBALLY (e.g., cognitive skills, language and communication, social-emotional skills and behavior, gross and fine motor skills, and self-help skills.). A DT incorporates all of the important work of occupational therapists (OT), speech and language pathologists (SLP), and physical therapists (PT) and other specialists (such as education or mental health) in their work with children to improve their functioning and relationships at home and at school. Developmental Therapists focus primarily on helping children learn how to stay engaged, to play with peers appropriately, develop their social-emotional capacities, and improve their communication skills. School-readiness skills can also be incorporated into therapy sessions. All of this is done primarily through PLAY!

How do I help families move forward?

I work with children and families to provide the tools, support and education families need to help their child with developmental delays (PDD-NOS), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), or communication disorders progress in all areas of their social-emotional and learning capacities. I do this primarily through working with families “on the floor” through PLAY!

A typical session in your home or at the clinic begins with the parents as we work together to assess your child’s individual needs. I listen to you, the parent(s), about challenges happening at school and home, your goals for your child, and determine in what areas your family may need support. The assessment process is followed by modeling play-based intervention strategies and parent coaching. I leave written goals for the family to work on until our next sessions.

I facilitate good team communication and coordinate services, if needed. A team approach is important to my work because I believe that families benefit the most from a team that is committed to good communication.
